Ukrzaliznytsia to invest uah 3 bln in infrastructure repairs

The State Railway Administration of Ukraine plans to spend UAH 3.04 billion on repairs of infrastructure and tracks this year.

This year the railways will allocate funds to repair track equipment, reconstruct main lines with elongated rails without joints, modernize track machines, track measurement and flaw-detecting cars, mechanisms and equipment. Ukrzaliznytsia has not received financing from the national budget for the purpose.

It is planned that 341.4 kilometers of tracks will be overhauled, 571.3 kilometers will be repaired and 365 kilometers will be modernized. In addition, 325.7 kilometers of main lines with elongated rails without joints will be reconstructed, 155 sets of points will be reconstructed, 115 sets will be replaced with new ones and 223 sets will be replaced with repaired sets, while 422 sets will be repaired.

In 2014, it is planned to equip level crossings used by buses with automated traffic light alarms, and to overhaul 90 crossings.

Every year Ukrzaliznytsia has to modernize around 800 kilometers of tracks and to overhaul 1,000 kilometers of tracks to ensure the stable state of track infrastructure.

In general, the annual need for financing the track infrastructure of the railways totals UAH 6.8 billion. The overdue terms for the overhaul of railway infrastructure is the main problem, as the speed of trains and safety of train services depends on this.

The length of the main railway lines in Ukraine totals to 21,640 kilometers, including 74% of rails without joints.

A total of 19,407 facilities are located on Ukrainian railways, including 7,813 bridges, 101 automobile overhead crossings, 44 railway tunnels and 10,948 water pipelines.
